Community Internal Medicine of Athens (CIMA) is an Internal Medicine clinic dedicated to providing quality patient care to Athens and surrounding areas. Our physicians specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adults, including the management of certain chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Opened in August 2015, CIMA also serves as the educational site for Resident Physicians of the AU-UGA Medical Partnership Internal Medicine Residency Program. Resident Physicians develop their ambulatory care skills while serving as primary care providers for their own panel of patients. They are supervised by our experienced faculty physicians who are board-certified in Internal Medicine.
The AU/UGA Medical Partnership is a four-year medical education program in Athens, Georgia created in partnership by Augusta University and the University of Georgia to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians that threatens the health of Georgians. The AU/UGA Medical Partnership combines the significant instructional and research resources of UGA, the state's flagship land-grant research university, with the expertise of AU, Georgia's only public medical school.
CIMA is conveniently located in Resource Medical office park off Oglethorpe Avenue in Athens, GA. Physicians are now taking new patients, and most major insurances are accepted.

What are Chronic Conditions?
Chronic conditions are health conditions or diseases that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting and require ongoing care.
Geriatric Clinic: Geriatric Medicine is a medical specialty encompassing the evaluation and treatment of the medical, psychological and social conditions of older adults. Geriatric medicine focuses on two principal goals: preserving or improving quality of life and fostering independence or control over life as long as possible. Geriatricians are specialized in geriatric assessment and rehabilitation, preventive medicine, management of patients in long-term care settings, and psycho-social, ethical, legal, and economic issues pertinent to geriatric patients. They give special attention to patients suffering from frailty, falls, incontinence, polypharmacy, cerebrovascular disease, dementia, sensory impairment and other cognitive and affective changes that occur with aging.
In general, you need to be 65 or older to be seen in this clinic, however for the problem of suspected dementia or other cognitive impairment, we will make exceptions to this rule on a case-by-case basis. Our geriatric medicine consultation clinic is staffed by our medical residents under the direct supervision of a board-certified geriatric medicine physician. You will be seen by both a medical resident and the geriatric physician who work together as a team. We also have an on-site social worker who can help in the care if needed. A referral from your primary care doctor, or a specialist physician, is required to be seen in this clinic.
Social Worker: CIMA has a licensed Clinical Social Worker on staff to assist patients who may face barriers to comprehensive medical care. These services include providing education to the patient as well as connecting them with resources outside of the clinic. The most common services provided are assistance with transportation, health literacy and financial resources. The social Worker also works with uninsured patients to access medications through various patient assistance programs.
Additionally, the Social Worker provides mental health services. This may include on the spot counseling for patients in crisis as well as on going supportive counseling sessions in the clinic or referrals to appropriate mental health providers within the community.
