Having an exercise routine planned in your day can be beneficial to mental health.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult to juggle all of your responsibilities. Balancing your work, education, family, and social commitments is a challenge. Adding daily exercise to your list of priorities may seem like a daunting task, but it is a crucial addition to your day. According to the CDC, only about 20% of women over the age of 18 meet physical activity guidelines. Having an exercise routine planned in your day can be beneficial to mental health.

Stress Reduction

It may seem counterintuitive, but adding exercise to your day can help you reduce stress. Women often face stressors in their lives as professionals, caregivers, homemakers, and in social situations. Engaging in any type of physical activity – including yoga, walking, running, or HIIT exercises – allows women to take a step away from their usual stressors and release their stress through physical activity.

Improved Sleep Quality

A good night’s rest is important for good mental health. Having daily exercise can improve sleep patterns. Not only can introducing regular physical activity tire you out, but it also promotes the release of melatonin. This hormone regulates your sleep cycles. Being well-rested can allow you to manage your emotions better and tackle the day with a clear mind.

Self-Esteem and Body Image

Exercise and physical activity can be powerful tools to enhance self-esteem and body image. Through exercise, women can have more control over their physical health. Engaging in physical activity can improve physical fitness and overall health. This can also improve self-confidence, which drastically improves mental health.

Social Connections

Many women find it helpful to exercise in groups. They may form walking groups or join a yoga/fitness class. Not only will being part of a group keep you accountable for being consistent with exercising, but this group will also provide opportunities for social connections. Having social connections is essential for having good mental health because it provides a sense of belonging and emotional support.
