Every year on March 30, a unique day called Doctor's Day is observed to recognize the contributions of doctors and their commitment to enhancing their patients' health and wellbeing. The occasion offers a chance to express gratitude and appreciation to the medical professionals who have had a significant influence on our lives. It is observed in many nations around the globe.
The recognition of Doctor's Day dates to 1933 when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician from Winder, Ga., began to advocate for a day to recognize the hard work and dedication of doctors. She chose March 30th as the date to celebrate Doctor's Day as it was the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford Long in 1842 at his practice in Jefferson, Georgia. The connection between Doctors Day and Northeast Georgia goes even deeper.
Dr. Long was born in Danielsville and attended the University of Georgia, where he received his Masters' degree. Shortly after graduation, he began his medical training at Transylvania College in Kentucky before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania to finish his Doctor of Medicine degree. He then returned to Jefferson, where a museum today documents his vital contributions to medicine.
Following years of advocacy by Almond and other medical groups, the U.S. House of Representatives finally recognized Doctor's Day in 1958 by passing a resolution. President George H.W. Bush formally enacted the holiday in 1990, and it has been observed ever since.
The carnation is among the most popular representations of Doctor's Day. The red carnation, which stands for adoration, love, and respect, is frequently used to depict the holiday. The custom of giving carnations to doctors on Doctor's Day originated in the early 20th century when a doctor in Winder, Georgia, started doing so to thank his colleagues for their hard work.
Doctors are committed to serving not only their patients but also the areas in which they live. Whether it's through free clinics, medical missions, or other charity initiatives, many physicians donate their time and knowledge to help those in need. We are inspired by how dedicated they are to serving others and changing the world for the better.
On this Doctor's Day, let's give thanks to doctors not only for the excellent care and service they provide to their patients but also for their commitment to improving communities. We truly appreciate you!
