December 4, 2023FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Athens, Ga. – December 11, 2023 – Dr. Laura Diamandopoulos, MD, LMCC, FACC, a cardiologist with nearly 20 years of clinical experience at Emory University, the Mayo Clinic and other institutions, has joined Oconee Heart and Vascular Center and is now accepting new patient appointments.
As a general cardiologist, Dr. Diamandopoulos partners with patients and other providers to maximize each patient’s cardiovascular health and quality of life. In addition to general cardiology, she is licensed in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
She takes a proactive, prevention-based approach to heart and blood vessel care that addresses key factors such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. She assesses each individual patient’s risk factors and symptoms, learns their goals for health and life, conducts in-office evaluations, orders tests, makes referrals to interventional cardiologists when needed, and provides follow-up care.
Born in Montreal, she is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada. She is fluent in English and French and also speaks some Greek. She comes to OHVC from St. Paul, Minn., where she has provided care as a noninvasive cardiologist with Health Partners Cardiology and Regions Hospital. Previously, she served as director of noninvasive cardiovascular imaging with Lutheran Hospital and SCL Health Heart Care in Wheat Ridge and Denver, Colo., and has practiced with several other systems, including Mayo Health System in Minnesota and New Mexico Heart Institute in Sante Fe.
Dr. Diamandopoulos also has held a variety of academic positions at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The presence of the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens was an important factor in her decision to relocate to Northeast Georgia.
She graduated with honors from Marianopolis College in Montreal, Quebec, with a dual diploma in health sciences and pure and applied sciences. She earned a bachelor of science degree with honors in physiology from McGill University in Montreal, then earned her medical degree from the University of Toronto. Her post-graduate clinical training included an internal medicine internship and residency at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a four-year fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. She has additional clinical training as a visiting medical student and resident physician in London, England.
