St. Mary’s Health Care System is resuming its popular Defensive Driving classes after a nearly three-year pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The class teaches evidence-based ways to reduce your risk of being involved in a traffic collision.

The in-person classes will be held on the second Saturday of each month, beginning March 11. Classes will meet from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Lobby Conference Room of St. Mary’s Hospital, 1230 Baxter St., Athens.

Classes will be taught by certified Defensive Driving instructor Jerry Gunter, who is also a member of St. Mary’s Safety and Security team. Cost is $30 for the general public, $15 for St. Mary’s employees, and free for St. Mary’s employees who are required to drive as part of their regular job duties.

Some auto insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who complete this course; check with your insurer to learn more.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Currently, payment is by cash or check only. Please call (706) 389-3911 for more information or to sign up.
