About
John V. Cuff, MD, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgeon who has been in practice in Athens for 42 years.
Dr. Cuff grew up in a small farming community in northwestern Ohio, the son of two teachers who instilled in him the desire and confidence to pursue a career in medicine – a direction his father had wanted to follow before World War II interrupted his plans.
Dr. Cuff received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969. After his internship at Detroit General Hospital, Dr. Cuff entered the Air Force, where he served as a general practitioner for four years. During those years, he spent time with various specialists and fell in love with neurosurgery.
Following his military service, Dr. Cuff completed neurosurgery training at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. He wanted to continue living in the Southeast, so he came to Athens, where he has practiced ever since. He is a founding partner of Georgia Neurological Surgery and Comprehensive Spine and is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
"Having both my parents as teachers has instilled in me the desire to make sure my patients have a thorough understanding of what their neurological or spinal conditions entail and what their options are," he states. "That involves spending additional time with patients and developing a closer relationship, which I feel leads to better resolution of symptoms and higher patient satisfaction."
