Student Volunteers
Please be aware that all student volunteers must have:
- Immunization records showing 2 MMRs
- Class schedule
- Proof of Negative TB test within last 12 months (if you have tested positive, please provide results of your chest x-ray)
Many college students seeking degrees in health care professions must complete volunteer assignments in their field as a requirement for graduation or for admission to educational programs. At St. Mary’s, we are pleased to work with these students to the maximum extent possible. Instead of allowing shadowing or observing, we offer volunteer opportunities that provide students with supervised, real-world experience as they work to meet admission or graduation requirements. Orientation sessions are held at the beginning of Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most volunteers serve a weekly three-hour shift; however, the time given varies among volunteers. We require a minimum of 30 hours per semester. The St. Mary’s Volunteer Office will work with you individually to develop a schedule that meets your needs and those of the department in which you are volunteering.

No. St. Mary’s Health Care is grateful for all our volunteers. However, because we coordinate such a large number of volunteers, we are unable to shift timeslots around as class schedules change. Thank you for understanding.

How to Volunteer
We appreciate your interest in volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Georgia. The application period for the Spring 2025 semester is now closed.
St. Mary's college volunteer applicants will fill out an online application. To be considered for volunteer placement, you must have a current TB skin test result (current means within the last 12 months – no exceptions). You must also provide immunization records showing 2 MMR vaccinations. If you do not provide these items then you will not be considered. A background check will also be required.
If you are awarded a volunteer spot, you must plan to volunteer 3-4 hours per shift, per week on a set schedule. You will also need to attend our in-person Orientation/training.
Additional Information:
- Previous volunteers are considered “returning” only if there has not been a gap in service. All others must complete the application/placement/orientation process.
