Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of patients
with disorders or injuries affecting the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and
nerves. A neurological surgeon may provide either surgical or non-surgical care, depending upon the
nature of the injury or illness.

Injuries to the head, spinal cord or nerves may require neurosurgical treatment. Neurosurgeons also
care for patients with tumors of the brain or spinal cord. Common problems such as carpal tunnel
syndrome are treated as well.

Perhaps the most common condition that neurosurgeons treat is pain in the neck or lower back. Some of
these symptoms may be treated non-surgically through medication or therapy. Osteoporotic fractures
of the spine are also treated with new procedures.

Neurosurgeons care for patients with a wide range of neurosurgical diagnoses, including:

We offer the newest and most advanced radiosurgical care for patients with brain and spine tumors
thanks to our partnership with University Cancer and Blood Center.

New to the Athens area, ExacTrac® Image-Guided Radiation Therapy gives us the capability to target
tumors with sub-millimeter accuracy. This means one-time treatment of many brain or spinal tumors
with no incision and no hospital, getting patients back to their lives right away.

This is truly one of the most start-of-the-art cancer treatment technologies available, and we are so
pleased to offer this uniquely precise, minimally invasive care to our community.
