We bid a fond farewell to Victor Morales, MD, who retired after 42 years of service.

The entire St. Mary's family – especially the staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Family Birth Center – bid a fond farewell to Victor Morales, MD, who retired after 42 years of service.

Dr. Morales helped St. Mary's open our NICU in 1978 and has provided lifesaving care to thousands of premature infants and extremely ill babies in the decades since.

"Babies may stay in the NICU for weeks, even months, and families form a unique bond with our NICU care team," says Montez Carter, St. Mary's President and CEO. "The outpouring of love for Dr. Morales as he retires has been heart-warming. So many former patients reached out with pictures and words of appreciation that staff needed two keepsake books to hold them all."

Dr. Morales leaves the unit in good hands, with a team of neonatologists continuing the high level of skilled, compassionate care for which St. Mary's NICU is known and loved.

God speed, Dr. Morales. Thank you for all you have done for St. Mary's, our community, and especially our tiniest and most vulnerable patients.

In its early years, St. Mary's NICU occupied a single large room. Today, St. Mary's NICU occupies a spacious and secure suite filled with lots of natural light, 9 private rooms and a 4-bed overflow area, all just a few steps from the nurses station.
