Lucia F. Cotten, MD, a board-certified physician with deep connections to the Athens area, has joined Endocrine Specialists of Athens (ESA) effective today, Sept. 11, 2023.

Dr. Cotten returns to the Athens region from Duke University Department of Medicine in Durham, N.C., where she recently completed a fellowship in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism-Clinical Track.

ESA is the practice of Jeremy Anthony, MD, and Beth Melvin, NP-C, RD, CDCES. Dr. Cotten will partner with them and each patient’s full healthcare team to address medical issues such as diabetes, osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease and conditions caused by diseases of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands.

Dr. Cotten is a native speaker of English and is certified as a medical interpreter in Spanish. She earned her bachelor’s degree cum laude in chemistry with a minor in Spanish from the University of Georgia. She then obtained her medical degree from the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens, after which she completed her residency at Emory University in Atlanta. Since 2018, she has also practiced as a primary care physician with the International Medical Clinic at Grady Health System in Atlanta.

Global health and community service have long been passions for Dr. Cotten. In addition to her practice with Grady’s International Medical Clinic, she has served as a health provider with Cervicusco Women’s Clinic in Peru and as an intern with the UGA Medical Spanish program in Trujillo, Peru. Her studies also included an immersion program in Spain.

Closer to home, Dr. Cotten’s volunteer service during her years at UGA included serving as a healthcare provider at the Mercy Health Center’s Student-Run Clinic, volunteering with Athens-Clarke County Free Sports Physicals and St. Mary’s Emergency Department, and coordinating holiday toy drives at Fowler Drive Elementary School as well as several health screening events across the community.
