Benefits of Cardiac Rehab
St. Mary’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program uses aerobic exercise to help you feel better by:
- Strengthening your heart so that you can increase your tolerance for exercise and other activities, including household chores and other aspects of daily living
- Controlling high blood pressure (hypertension), a major contributing factor to cardiovascular disease
- Increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL) while decreasing total cholesterol and “bad” cholesterol (LDL)
- Decreasing total body fat, which helps reduce the workload on your heart. To accomplish this goal, you must also include a healthy, well-balanced diet
- Increasing coronary collateral vascularization, which means increasing the number of blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen directly to your heart muscle
- Reducing stress, a proven benefit of exercise
- Enhancing your ability to sleep, another benefit of exercise that can boost your heart health and reduce stress
- Providing a social network for people who have had a cardiac event. Cardiac rehab programs often become a “second family” for the participants, many of whom take comfort in getting to know others who share their feelings and concerns.
